Dear Eagle Nation:

WELCOME BACK!!! We hope you have had a summer filled with some fun and relaxation.  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  Although due to COVID-19 mass transmission we are not beginning with face to face instruction as we all had hoped, we are still excited to begin the 2020-21 school year with you virtually!  Our Reopening Task Force has been working diligently to ensure as smooth a transition to virtual learning as possible.  This letter is FILLED with lots of important information that you will need, to ensure there is a smooth transition to virtual learning for your child.

We have had a major staffing change this summer.  Our new interim assistant principal is Mr. Mikhiel De’Braux.  He brings to us previous administrative experience and a passion and love for learning and students.  We welcome him aboard and are expecting great things from his addition to the administrative team here at James Hurst!

Now is an EXCELLENT time to begin to get students prepared for the new school year and re-establish daily and bedtime routines.  An excellent article to read can be found below:

Below you will find important information about the start of the school year:

  • Device & Textbook Distribution: The school division has designated Wednesday, September 2nd as our day to distribute technology devices to our students.K-1st grade will be using iPads and 2nd – 6th will be using Chromebooks.Parents of K-1st grade students that participated in Virtual Summer Camps will need to return their devices distributed this summer when picking up the iPad. Please be aware of the following:
    • Everyone must check-in with a JHES staff member to get direction for device and textbook distribution upon arrival.
    • Only a parent/guardian with a valid ID can pick up devices for JHES students.
    • You must have a mask in order to enter the building.
    • ALL CDC guidelines to slow transmission of COVID-19 will be followed.
    • No children will be allowed in building.
    • COVID-19 Screening Forms will be completed prior to entering the building.
    • Textbooks or information for electronic textbooks will be distributed by grade level.
    • A technology use agreement must be signed prior to attaining a device.
    • Be sure to attain student password credentials.
    • Please see schedule below.September 2nd is the only day prior to the start of school that devices will be distributed.


  • Welcome Back Day: Parents and students will be able to meet and greet assigned teachers during a Drive-By Tailgate on Friday, September 4, 2020 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.K-3rd will be located in the front of the building and 4th – 6th will be located on the bus ramp.Teachers will also distribute any other items students may need for virtual learning.


  • Virtual Office Hours:Our school office hours are 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. New this year are teacher virtual office hours, 2:45 – 4:00 pm. When teachers are not involved in planning or meetings, this time will be available for virtual support to students and parents.Please email you child’s teacher in advance to ensure they are accessible to support you.


  • Student Virtual Arrival:Students will be expected to begin logging in virtually beginning at 9 am daily to participate in morning activities and prepare for live instruction.Live instruction will begin promptly at 9:30 am. Students are expected to participate each day in live instruction.If your child is unable to attend class, please notify the teacher via email.Teachers will record live instruction and make it available to all students.


  • Breakfast and Lunch:Students will be given an ID card during device distribution that must be shown in order to take advantage of free breakfast and lunch.


  • Attendance/Tardy:With guidance from the VA Department of Education, students will have specific guidelines in order to be marked present during virtual learning.This information will be explained in more detailed in our Parent Handbook.


  • Your child’s assignment for the 2020-21 School Year will be mailed this week.If you do not receive it by September 2nd, please contact the school.

I don’t take it lightly that we have been entrusted with developing our world’s future, especially during these unprecedented times. Even though this year may present itself with some challenges and uncharted waters, we will get through this together with patience, understanding, and common commitment for the best for our children.  This is our year of increase!
